Most people I speak to about memoir do not know the difference between autobiography, biography and memoir. And for most of them, the distinction as unimportant but for an aspiring author, especially if doubled up with an entrepreneur, the distinction is vital. Wikipedia’s definition of memoir is “a collection of memories that an individual writes about moments or events, both public or private, that took place in the subject’s life”. This is a good start, but it does not throw the light onto the topic that will create a light bulb moment for an entrepreneur of why they should be interested in memoir to grow their business.

I spent the last two weeks in a group of entrepreneurs who aspire to become authors and not one of them could see the power of memoir for their business. I can’t blame them. I was a participant, not the leader of the group, so I did not try to put them right. Imagine how their position would have changed if I had told them that a memoir is much more than events. Marion Roach Smith, a prominent memoir coach defines it as ‘Something you know after something you have been through”. Suddenly it shows that even though it is about the author, it is not actually about the author but something much bigger.

Not everyone will be inspired to write a memoir for business but I want you to understand the concept so you have choices. Memoirs are incredibly powerful to create rapport with people, especially if you mentor people in your business. I am both a writing mentor and a business mentor. My memoir is part of a strategy to create a deeper know like trust factor with my audience. It is about the last few months of the life of my father and the eighteen months that followed. I evidence as I share my story that communicating to spirit didn’t come easy to me and I am hoping I can inspire “normal” business owners realise that if I was able to learn to do that, so can they. As for the benefits of being in touch with the spirit world, I have covered this in depth in previous episodes of the podcast and would encourage you to watch the episode where I talk about the top three benefits of working with a business spirit guide.

My memoir is of course about magic, life and death, forgiveness and resilience. Again, what does this have to do with business? I believe that until you make peace with your father (and mother) you are likely to have problems with authority and that will impact your level of success. The other aspect is that you will tend to seek approval from external sources rather than from yourself and that too, will hold you back.

If you would like to buy my memoir, click here to sign up for my memoir newsletter. I only sell my memoir to my list in order to preserve my relationship with my mother. It is available as a PDF for £7.77 and will be available for Father’s Day as a paperback. To listen to the episode, click on the player below or go to iTunes here.
